About the Role We are seeking a compassionate, principled, and motivated Executive Officer to lead the organisation into its next chapter. This is a hands-on, purpose-driven role.You will support Deaf individuals, strengthen partnerships, and ensure our services remain accessible, high-quality, and responsive to community needs. While BSL skills (British Sign Language) are welcomed, they are not essential what matters most is your commitment to equality, integrity, and willingness to learn.This role is ideal for someone passionate about community empowerment and improving communication access across Cornwall and South Devon. Key Responsibilities: Leadership & Management Lead the day-to-day operations of the charity Work closely with the Board of Trustees to shape strategy and priorities Manage staff, volunteers, and freelance communication professionals Ensure compliance with legal, financial, and safeguarding responsibilitiesAdvocacy & Community Engagement Advocate for Deaf people’s rights and communication access Build trusted relationships with Deaf individuals, families, and community groups Work with Cornwall Council, the ICB, and other public bodies to highlight challenges and influence service improvements Maintain strong links with the local Deaf club and wider communityPartnerships & Collaboration Maintain and develop partnerships, including with the Cornwall Disability Alliance Represent the charity at meetings, forums, and community events Support joint projects and campaigns that promote equality and accessibilityService Delivery Oversee the delivery of BSL and Deaf communication support services Ensure services are accessible, high-quality, and responsive to community needsFundraising & Sustainability Identify and pursue funding opportunities, including grants, contracts, and community fundraising Build positive relationships with funders, donors, and supporters Contribute to grant applications, reporting, and funding bids Support the development of sustainable income streamsCommunications & Awareness Promote Deaf awareness across Cornwall and South Devon Support the creation of accessible information, including BSL-friendly contentPerson Specification: Essential Strong communication and interpersonal skills A compassionate, principled, and community-focused approach Ability to advocate confidently and respectfully Experience working with vulnerable groups, communities, or charities Proven ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders Experience with fundraising, grant applications, or donor engagement Strong organisational and leadership skills Commitment to equality, inclusion, and Deaf empowerment Ability to work independently and take initiative Full driving licence and ability to travel to outreach and training events Desirable Knowledge of Deaf culture and Deaf community issues BSL skills, or a willingness to learn Experience in the charity sector Experience managing staff or volunteers Understanding of accessibility, communication support, or advocacy Experience working with local authorities or public services Why Work With Us?Joining Hearing Loss Cornwall means becoming part of a small charity with a big heart and a clear purpose.
